I watched an interview by Rachel Maddow with James Talarico, the Democratic candidate for United States senator from Texas and was left with a wondrous sense of hope. After over a year of lies, blatant corruption, phobias of everything that is not white, christian, male or wealthy, politics of fear, deception and total lack of any semblance of morality from the Trump administration, this young man was simply a breath of fresh air. He used the word “love” as often as Trump uses “hate”, he described in detail what he has done in the Texas legislature and repeated the methods he used involving bipartisan talks and compromise. Most memorable, his top priority if he becomes a senator, would be to reintroduce the 1965 Voting Rights Act standards and work to be sure that everyone has an equal opportunity to vote.
