Probably because I am such a prodigious reader, I have been asked how I choose a book. I depend somewhat on published reviews, but watch for red flags and avoid ones that include the words;

“a debut novel” Could be a lucky break. Wait for a second one.

“gripping” “powerful” hair-raising” Forget it. Want to be able to sleep that night.

“Over 500 pages”. Too heavy to hold in bed.

“Meticulously researched”. Boring

“A debut novel written from the point of view of a dog.” Not a chance!
